What Makes a Good Harvest?
In this video, you’ll notice we talk a lot about what makes a good harvest. For this particular job, we were doing what is known as “selective logging.” That’s where we pick certain trees that are worthwhile to be sold. Trees such as walnut and oak fall in this category. Part of what goes into this is deciding what trees will be more worthwhile in the future. Clearing out all the good timber isn’t always necessarily the best course of action. Certain trees still have time to grow and become good timber that will make our clients money in the future.
Timber Management Techniques
You’ll notice we go over a few of our timber management tactics in the video. As we mentioned earlier, part of this is leaving some trees to grow for a later harvest. Another part of this is cutting down the smaller trees around them so those trees have even more room to grow. Additionally, we try to look out for when completing a harvest is habitat management. Some dead trees or trees that have health issues will be left in the harvest site for several reasons. One reason is they’re not worth the time to bring down because the timber won’t bring in any money, but it’s also important to consider that these trees are still a perfectly good habitat for squirrels, chipmunks, and other woodland creatures. Some of these trees with issues can still produce acorns, so it is worthwhile to keep them around.
